World daily temperature records have been smashed this week, according to preliminary data.

(Editor’s note: Rarely mentioned in this repeatedly recurring journalism on the topic is the heat island and this Phys.org article is no exception. If weather stations are in or near cities, how does the heat island not bias the global temperature? The data is corrected first of course. In the 1970sw I believe, the heat island was identified as a bias in global temperature data so scientists began correcting the data before it was incorporated into global average temperature modeling. This correction simply compared the urban thermometer data to nearby rural thermometer data and reduced the temperature of the urban data accordingly. In the late 2000s this correction began looking at satellite images of night lights across the globe to better understand the true nature of rural station corrections applied to urban temperature data.

The modeling tools that produced these estimates can provide an early warning of extreme heat events, even if they aren’t as precise as monthly and yearly reports produced by leading agencies, say experts.

Who is producing the data?
The University of Maine has established an online tool called Climate Reanalyzer, which shows the curves of average global temperature for each day since 1979.

On Monday July 3, this curve reached a high of 17.01 degrees Celsius (62.62 degrees Fahrenheit). That record was surpassed on Tuesday with 17.18C (62.92F), and again on Thursday with 17.23C (63.01F).
